CyanogenMod 7 runs on the Kindle Fire

It just got a lot harder for Android fans to dismiss the Kindle Fire as an Android tablet wannabe, now that it can be hacked to run CyanogenMod. Xda-developer JackpotClavin managed to flash a version of CyanogenMod 7 onto the tablet device using ClockworkMod. The CyanogenMod ROM  brings the full Android experience to the tablet.

The hack will de-register your Kindle Fire from Amazon’s servers. It removes Amazon’s Silk browser and breaks the tablet’s tight integration with Amazon’s videos, books and music. Most of this functionality can be restored by installing the Kindle app from the Android Market,  or by side-loading apps to give you access to Amazon’s content. Most Amazon apps were pulled from the Kindle Fire shortly after it was rooted.

This hack is a proof of concept at this point, as the build has some glitches. Knowing how quickly the developers at xda work,  improvements should be coming along soon.  There’s also a possibility that some devs want to bring Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich to the tablet. You can follow the  progress at this xda-developers thread.
